Quote:
"The new classroom should teach the huge array of complex skills that come under the heading of digital literacy. And it should make students accountable on the Web, where they should regularly be aiming, from grade-school on, to contribute to a wide range of wiki projects."

My Reaction:
While I agree with the statement that classrooms DO need to add more technology into the lessons and make students more comfortable with technology and teach them all of the possibilities that can arise from using the internet, I think it needs to also be said that classrooms shouldn't rely solely upon technology to teach children. Children still need to be able to socialize and express themselves in ways that don't involve technology. For example, in this class I am required to comment on my classmates blogs, and I will do that. However, I doubt that most of my classmates and I will ever have a real face-to-face conversation. I think that schools need to keep human interaction a priority in the classroom but also bring in the technological side as well.

  1. Kyleigh,
I agree with you that children do need technology in the classroom but cannot solely rely on it. But, they will still be interacting with each other in the physical classroom. Even if they are reading a book on an interactive 3d projection (or some crazy technology that doesn't exist yet), they will still communicate with each other and share their ideas. As long as kids are still going to school, they will have to interact face to face.

  2. Kyliegh,
i agree with you 100% without physical interaction between you and your peers you will never really develop good social skills. That is why some kids that were home schooled and then put into a public take some time to get adjusted because of the lack of social interaction

  3. Kyliegh, I agree with you that schools still need to have "traditional" lessons or teaching skills. Although the technology is on the rise, not everything in life will have do be done with the some form of technology. If we continue to grow on this path, schools may come as a ghost town in the past. Schools could soon go onto virtual classrooms instead of traditional. I know that as a parent I want my child to be able to go to school and learn both traditionally and technology. Sooner than later everything will be done with some form of technology.

  4. I couldn't agree more. Although I believe it's inevitable that we will rely more and more on technology as time goes on, we cannot become robots. Everyone needs to have good "people" skills, or I'm afraid that we will end up like the characters in Wall-E.

  5. Kyleigh,

I agree with everything that you said. I believe that it is important for the classroom to have technology but at the same the children need interaction with other students. But the students will be interacting with others while in school. So, they will get the best of both worlds, being able to use and learn about technology while talking to peers. With the usage of technology in the classroom they will be building both social and technology skills that will be needed for jobs in the future.

  6. I half and half agree with your statement. I totally agree with you saying that children do need to be comfortable with technology, but I also feel that at the rate technology is coming and how the future jobs will be not even thought of at the time of the beginning of their educational careers, it needs to be drilled in their heads. The only thing that could cause a problem however, is the teachers that will use technology as a crutch for their own lack of social skills which could inhibit the children in the classroom.

  7. This is a very good point to bring up--a lot of times, people who think technology should be used more and more in the classroom feel that it should be the main source of instruction. This, however, should not be the case--students need more interpersonal relationships ALONG WITH the growing integration of technology. Even something as simple as a Skype conversation is worthy of being counted as a type of personal relationship.
I agree with Alex V. in that teachers need to be aware that they might become dependent on technology, and this would take away from the classroom experience.

  8. You make a great point Kyleigh. And you are right, kids need the social interaction via face to face. But, could this also be done through the use of social networks?
